About Stop Junk Mail Kit
“It’s the little things...” StopJunkMailKit.com was started in 2008 by three brothers — Shane Pfannes, Tim Pfannes, and Sander DeVries — who believe that when it comes to caring for the environment, it’s the little things we all can do that make a difference.
One “little thing’ that was becoming a big problem was our recycling boxes full of unsolicited junk mail. Those weekly piles of unopened catalogs, wrinkly coupon mailers, and pushy credit card offers got us thinking about how much environmental waste goes into our nation’s mailboxes each year. We did some research and we learned that more than 100 million trees are destroyed to produce unwanted junk mail, accounting for more greenhouse gas emissions than 2.8 million cars. In addition, about 28 billion gallons of water are wasted to produce and dispose of unwanted junk mail. All for about 41 pounds of postal mail we never asked for and don’t want.
We wanted a fast, easy way to stop junk mail from entering our mailboxes and knew lots of other environmentally conscious people might too. The Stop Junk Mail Kit was created, and we’re delighted to help put an end to this needless stream of environmental waste. Help us spread the word that anyone can easily stop junk mail and help conserve our most valuable natural resources.
Some other “little things” you can do to make a difference
Stopping unwanted postal junk mail is one of the “little things” we can all do that makes a big difference. But there are lots of other ways to reduce your environmental impact, conserve energy and help save our natural resources.
Here’s a list of some of our favorite “little things”:
- Turn down the thermostat a few degrees to save money and energy
- Ask the power company to provide a free audit of your home’s energy use
- Use compact fluorescent lights (CFLs) instead of traditional incandescent bulbs
- Reduce, reuse, and recycle
- Plant a tree, or help an organization like Trees for the Future plant trees in your community
And here’s some “not-so-little things” you can do to help care for the environment:
- Buy a hybrid automobile
- Generate your own electricity with solar panels
- Work from home or move closer to your workplace to reduce gas consumption and automotive exhaust
